25 Dec Feliz Navidad @ Els Quatre Gats
Feliz Navidad from Els Quatre Gats Amigos!!!
We are celebrating Christmas this year in buzzing Barcelona!
Yesterday was Christmas Eve and we went to the most amazing restaurant ever! Here are the deets 😉
Els Quatre Gats is the name of a café in Barcelona, Spain that famously became a popular meeting place for famous artists throughout the modernist period in Cataluña. The café opened on June 12, 1897 in the famous Casa Marti, and served as a hostel, bar and cabaret until it eventually became a central meeting point for Barcelona’s most prominent modernist figures, such as Pablo Picasso! The bar closed due to financial difficulties in June 1903, but was reopened and eventually restored to its original condition in 1989 and we dined here just yesterday on Christmas Eve! As impressive is the history, is the food!
What we ordered:
Starter – Ox Angus Cannelloni in truffle bechamel (no pictures as we dug in it way too fast :/)
Mains 1 – Pumpkin Ravioli in Goat Cheese sauce
Mains 2 – Cod Au Gratin with Quince jelly and Spinach
Dessert – Apricot cake with ginger, coconut mousse and creamy citron
What we loved:
The Cannelloni was an unexpected package. The tender Angus inside and silken truffle bechamel was perfect to whet the appetite for the next course!
Spaniards love their Cod! And this one was particularly delectable. I’m not a huge pescados-fan but I loved it nonetheless.
The Ravioli! Although Italian, the Spanish chefs turned this into my favourite dish of the night! The creamy goat cheese sauce and freshly made Ravioli blew our mind away! I couldn’t breathe after but it was well worth the gazillions of calories.
The dessert – I’m a chocoholic but I decided to give the quirky combination of Apricot and coconut a go and I wasn’t disappointed. After a heavy cheesy meal, the freshness of citron, coconut and apricot was perfect to end the meal and lighten the palate.
Highly recommended if you’re in Barcelona! The ambience, history, food – made it a perfect festive dinner venue and we loved it! <3 (at Els Quatre Gats)
